Activity Description

We propose a nested prospective cohort study within the existing cryptococcal meningitis clinical research program at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. The study aims to characterize ophthalmic complications in this unique patient population and assess if eye findings, specifically cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis and papilloedema, can be used to inform management of cryptococcal meningitis. We will use this formative study as an opportunity to assess feasibility of a smartphone-based indirect ophthalmoscope/camera system for future tele-ophthalmology applications.
